Sibley’s, also known as Sibley, Lindsay & Curr Co., was a prominent department store founded in Rochester, New York, in 1868. The store was a major retail institution in the region for over a century. Known for its grandeur and elegance, Sibley’s flagship store occupied an entire city block at 228 East Main Street and was once the largest department store between New York City and Chicago.
Sibley’s offered a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories, home goods, and more, providing a one-stop shopping experience. The store was celebrated for its elaborate window displays, especially during the holiday season, and its iconic clock, which became a popular meeting spot for locals. The building itself is an architectural landmark, featuring classic Beaux-Arts design elements.
The company merged with the Associated Dry Goods Corporation in 1957, which later became part of the May Department Stores Company. Despite its closure in 1989, Sibley’s remains a beloved part of Rochester’s history and is remembered fondly by those who shopped and worked there.
